UNIMAS Medical Interview for Batch 2018/2019 to enter Year 2019/2020
First and foremost, welcome to matchamed! If you're one of those who got selected for an interview to enter UNIMAS medical faculty for the Doctor of Medicine course, read well!
FIRST INTAKE - conducted early and selects students from UNIMAS Foundation programme
SECOND INTAKE - Students outside of their foundation programme that applied for UPU. Note that even UNIMAS foundation students can undergo this interview, I'll go in detail later!
I was selected for the First intake. For our batch (2018/2019), a total of 108 students were selected out of 300-ish Life Science students. However, roughly only 70+ (subject to change) will be accepted. Honestly, your chances are pretty high for this just don't MESS UP. To qualify for the first interview, your CGPA for semester 1 (Midsem + Final Sem 1) must be 3.50. But in my batch to be really really safe, you mid semester exams for Semester 2 should be more than or equal to 3.50 as well. During my time, I had a friend who had more than 3.50 for her total CGPA semester 1, but because she dropped immensely in mid semester exam for Sem 2, she did not qualify for the first interview.
Now for preparation, I just do the basic things like research on recent medical issues surrounding Malaysia and ESPECIALLY Sarawak. They will definitely ask questions revolving around health issues in Sarawak. Don't forget to memorize the names of the faculty administration like the dean, deputies, lecturers etc. For the first intake interview, it'll be held at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, in which you'll be divided by sessions.
I read seniors' previous blogs that they had one interview lasting 15-20 minutes with 4-5 lecturers asking questions, and I was expecting just that. But, BOY WAS I WRONG! On the day of the interview, we had to undergo 5 MINI INTERVIEWS, in which each last strictly 8 minutes each. Each interview is divided into stations. In station 1, you'll meet interviewer 1, station 2 with interviewer 2 and etc. There will be some sort of loud alarm to indicate whether your time is up, and you have to get out to let the next person in. So you have to give a great first impression!
WHAAA?!
The interview wasn't all rainbows and glitter, it was MENTALLY EXHAUSTING! The interviewers will definitely question your passion, and they won't really do it "politely". They'll test how good you'll work under pressure and trust me when I say THEY CAN SMELL CLICHE ANSWERS! Plus, make sure you get you facts accurate! They'll definitely know you'll be bluffing if you try to get away with medical nonsense! I've seen my fellow interview mates cry as they went out their first station and carried on with red eyes until their last.
I almost broke down after my first station but I had to suck it in, the last thing I wanted was to give them an impression that I break down under pressure, and I'm glad I DIDN'T!
I am glad to say that I was accepted and am currently waiting to start my first year as a medical student. To those who are working towards their dream, keep fighting for it!
HOW'S THE SECOND INTAKE SIS??
The interview format is pretty much the same based on my friend who happened to go to the second one. Basically, the second intake interview is for those who didn't qualify for the first interview, but after obtaining a CGPA (Final Sem 1+ Final Sem 2) of 3.50 and above, you'll be called for an interview in Kuala Lumpur (may differ in the future). HOWEVER, you'll be competing with other students outside of UNIMAS foundation and you'll only be notified A FEW DAYS PRIOR to the interview. For our batch, some of my friends happened to only get the notification around 5 DAYS before the actual interview. So much hassle to buy tickets!! But, if you want it, gotta work for it!
If you have any questions, feel free to drop it down at the comments and I'll try my best to answer :D
